In December 2016, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage officially registered the ‘Jeju Haenyeo Culture’ as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is a meaningful achievement in which the long lives and wisdom of the Haenyeo, as well as the unique culture preserved by the community, are recognized as values that should be preserved by all of humanity. Jeju Haenyeo Culture has played a major role in forming the identity of the Jeju region through traditional rituals such as Haenyeo Gut and Haenyeo Song, oral culture, and intergenerational transmission, beyond a simple livelihood. It fully embodies the philosophy of respecting nature and a community-centered life. Haenyeo, who dive into the sea without oxygen tanks to catch seafood, are symbols of strong vitality and self-reliance, representing the image of Jeju women who have made a living in the harsh nature. Haenyeo work is carried out in a way that coexists harmoniously without destroying nature, and this is receiving attention today as a sustainable way of life. UNESCO has placed high value on this Haenyeo Culture because it goes beyond a simple local tradition and suggests a direction for the future of humanity. Jeju Haenyeo culture is now a world cultural heritage, an asset that we all must understand and protect. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Haenyeo Association is continuously striving for preservation, education, research, and global promotion in order to pass this precious cultural heritage on to future generations.
